Like to run a
healing clinic in a doctor's surgery?
September 2002 was the date
I opened a healing clinic in my local doctors' surgery, the Sonning Common
Health Centre near Henley on Thames. As a background, I had run meditation
classes for the centre's receptionists, so when I tabled the idea with the
Practice Manager, she knew a little about me and was happy to forward
information; although she did warn me that she didn't hold much hope in the
idea.
My first letter to the
Senior Doctor resulted in a "no". Up to that time I had been working
part time as a healer at the healing clinic in the College of Psychic Studies
in London but felt compelled to set up something locally to where I live. In a
former life I was involved in sales, and unperturbed, I knew that sometimes a
"no" meant "give me more information". My intuition was
also telling me to try again. I telephoned Dr. Craig Brown, whom I heard was a
doctor and a healer and who also had had a healer working at his practice near
Brighton for the past 15 years. "Don't bombard them with lots of
information otherwise it will go in the bin" was one of things I
remembered him saying. So I painted the picture in more detail in the hope that
the doctors could see how it might work in their own environment. Firstly, I
suggested one afternoon per week, half hour appointments and donation only -
the same way the College of Psychic Studies operated, as it seemed to work
particularly well. I found that the surgery had a room which would be ideal so
I suggested every Wednesday between 2.30-5pm on a three month trial. Incredibly
the senior doctor agreed. The practice manager was incredulous as she felt sure
he would be the hardest to convert to the concept of spiritual healing.
Nearly two years has passed
and due to demand the clinic is now open Wednesday 2.30pm - 6pm and Thursday
4pm-6pm. Teresa Collier, a wonderful NFSH trained healer who lives in the
Henley area came to help me and we run the clinic together.
Demand has been so high, we
often find ourselves coming in slightly earlier for very needy cases and are
toying with the idea of opening a third slot.
We have seen many types of
people aged from early 20s right through to their late 70s and have an equal
division of men and women.
One gentleman comes
specifically for pain relief as he has been on a long waiting list for a knee
operation and healing has given him a massive reduction in the pain he was
experiencing. He is unable to take painkillers due to a heart condition and
this poor man also has to have a pacemaker fitted before his knee operation - I
am so glad he has a sense of humour as it has been a tough road for him and
truly an honour to channel healing energy during these trying times.
Another interesting thing
happened earlier this year. I had booked a general meeting with staff at the
surgery to answer any questions and give an update on the healing clinic. An
hour before the meeting was due it was cancelled as two of the doctors were
called away urgently. We had to wait another month to arrange another meeting,
but during this time we were visited by a sceptical Glaswegian called Alan.
Alan had Parkinson's disease which he had had for five years. He had tried all
sorts of different remedies and treatments and healing was a last resort. I
always ask patients with long standing problems to come for at least three
sessions, particularly as experience has shown that the body often starts to
use the healing energy with a noticeable improvement after this time. One of
Alan's problems was that he shook uncontrollably. It was a side effect of the
medication he was taking, however if he didn't take it, he couldn't stand up.
When he first came for healing it was difficult to work around him as his arms
and legs would move quite erratically. Amazingly, by the third session the
shaking started to subside and as each week went on, got less and less. After
about the 8th session, his tremors had practically gone. Teresa saw him this
week and he had no tremors at all. He has told us both that it has completely
changed his life. He went on his first holiday abroad and now is able to go out
in the evenings. Dr Dan Benor, an American doctor who started the Doctor Healer
Network in 1988 spoke about the fact that healing can harmonise with medication
and this is what was happening with Alan.
Needless to say by the time
the next surgery meeting was arranged, I suddenly had the thought to ask Alan
if he would come along to answer any questions the doctors may have. Nothing
like getting a patient to explain it I thought. We had a great turnout for a
medium sized surgery, 10 members of staff attended and Alan was able to tell
his story and personally answer their numerous questions. Since that time the
doctors have recommended more people to try healing and I can only think that
the universe had orchestrated it to help us demystify the healing process.
My healing journey started a
number of years ago. My much loved retired racing greyhound pulled a muscle
while out running on uneven ground. That night she was in a lot of pain,
getting up and turning around as dogs do and I was upset to hear her crying. At
2am I got up and put my hands on her sore shoulder and asked God to help. It
was a strange experience, I felt great heat coming through my hands and a
"handing over" feeling that enabled me to let go my deep concern. The
next morning she greeted me as I woke up with no limp, no pain, nothing. I was
astounded. Somehow in the next two weeks I was given information about the
college and found myself on a Saturday workshop, an introduction to
healing.
After completing the healing
course, I went back to where my first introduction to healing started and spent
five days on an animal healing workshop with Angela Watkins. Since that time I
have worked with a number of animals from horses, cats and dogs and recently
attended Amelia Kinkade's one day animal psychic workshop. When connecting with
animals she offered invaluable advice and I was soon able to find out some
information about a Labrador retriever who I believed was being neglected. The
dog told me she would rather stay with the family as she loves them very much,
even though she knows they don't walk her enough!
In the healing clinic, I
know I am sitting in front of people who are there because something has gone
wrong in their lives, whether it's physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. I
listened to people and realised that in a lot of cases they were showing
physical symptoms because they felt stuck and were suffering mild depression
and a sense of hopelessness. A huge proportion of illness starts from what we
think. At that point I began to search for the compliment to my healing work.
An opportunity arose to train as a life coach with the largest coaching school
in the world, Coach University in the US. Getting to the source of peoples'
problems, helping them get back into the driving seat of their life, into the
world of choices and options with power and grace, has been a truly life
changing and immensely rewarding experience. It is the golden thread that now
runs through all that I do and I had an injured dog to thank for such a
rewarding vocation.
