Raising our awareness
How awake do you think you really
are? Are you doing the work you love, spending time in the way you would like,
or do you think you need to put up with a particular kind of life, one that
consists of things you are tolerating - everything from the unappreciative
boss, the badly behaved dog, the difficult teenager or even the messy cupboard
in the hall. Where did we get the idea that tolerating is OK? Generally people
put up with too much. They think they "must" or "should" do
certain things and that there are no options and choices available to them.
This is one of the reasons that in recent times we have such a high rate of
depression - people believing that there are no other possible routes out than
the one they have found themselves on.
For those who have experienced an
accident or serious illness it can often have a life changing effect. Sometimes
these supposed misfortunes have turned into blessings in disguise. I don't know
how many people have said something like, "If it hadn't have been for that
accident when I was lying in bed, I never would have thought about going back
to university to train in xxx which is what I always thought I would do".
It can sometimes take a life threatening or very challenging situation to
really help us wake up and become fully conscious again. Nothing like being
stopped in one's tracks to get us back on target and back on the road we were
meant to be walking on.
By raising our awareness we begin
to identify and rediscover that special place inside all of us, to get back in
touch with our intuition and give ourselves the opportunity to really look at
our lives once and for all.
I trained as a life coach because
I discovered that talking was also "healing". Becoming a "tool
provider" has been immensely rewarding, but also working with clients from
a bigger perspective, learning to think differently about life and looking at a
much broader vista of how life could be. People ask me whether my clients have
unreal expectations. No, in fact the reverse is true. By conquering fears and
uncertainties, a whole new world of opportunities and possibilities opens up.
You begin to live back in the world of choices and options and life suddenly
can become very exciting again.
ACTION PLAN If you could
look ahead one year from now and money wasn't an option (this is a creative
exercise!), what would you be doing? What would you be wearing? Would you be
living in the same house, same country? What would you like more of in your
life? Less of? Are you repeating the same patterns, for example, going for the
same type of unsuitable partner, putting up with an unfulfilling job or could
you easily fill up a list of 20 things you are currently tolerating in your
life? Remember, the first step is raising your awareness
